Before Surgery

To expedite your check-in process, it is helpful if you pre-register online through the Pre-registration tab on this website as soon as you are scheduled for your procedure.  Simply click on the Pre-registration link on the menu, fill out all of the requested information and it will be forwarded to the Surgery Center.  Our Pre-Operative Call Nurse will call you one to two business days prior to your procedure to give you specific eating instructions, tell you what time to arrive and obtain any information still needed.

If you have not received a call from us the business day before your procedure please call us at 203-373-1838 between 9 & 2 Monday through Friday.

Food and Drink

You will receive specific eating and drinking instructions from our Pre-Op Nurse.  If you do not receive specific instructions from our nurse, a general rule of thumb for adults is do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the evening prior to your procedure. If you are diabetic, please be sure you have received instructions from our pre-op nurse 1 - 2 days before your procedure.

For Children:  Under one year old, clear liquids up to two (2) hours prior to arrival time.  Breast milk or formula six (6) hours prior to arrival time.  Children 1-10 years old may have clear liquids up to two (2) hours prior to arrival, no solid food eight hours prior to arrival time.

A clear liquid is defined as water, apple juice or ginger ale. Milk and formula are not clear liquids.

Alcohol
Do not drink alcohol for at least 12 hours before your arrival.

Smoking
No smoking after midnight the night before your surgery.

Makeup, Nail Polish, Jewelry & Body Piercings
Do not wear body lotion and please remove all make up, nail polish, jewelry, including wedding bands and watches, and all body piercings prior to your arrival at the surgery center.

Clothing
Wear loose, casual, comfortable clothing to fit over dressings.

Valuables
Please leave your valuables at home.

Notify The Center & Your Surgeon If:

  • You have an elevated temperature, cough, cold, vomiting or diarrhea between your last visit to the surgeon and the day of your surgery.
  • You suspect you may be pregnant.
  • You are taking: diet pills, aspirin, ibuprofen, or certain herbal medicines.  You may need to stop taking these 1-2 weeks before your surgery.  You can discuss this with your surgeon. 

What You Need The Day Of The Procedure:

  • Information To Bring: Insurance cards, photo ID, Medicare or Medical Assistance information, numbers and addresses.
  • Living Will:  If you have a living will or advanced directive, please bring a copy of it with you.
  • Driver: You must plan to have someone drive you home.  Do not plan to use taxis or other public transportation.
  • Escort: A friend, relative or dedicated caregiver MUST stay with you for 24 hours.
  • Legal Guardian: A legal guardian must remain in the center AT ALL TIMES for children and dependent adults.
  • Care For Children: If you have young children at home for whom you normally care for, plan for someone else to care for them for at least the first 24 hours following your surgery. Further, please leave young children at home.  Unfortunately, we are not set up to care for children other than our pediatric patients.
  • Interpreter: If the patient cannot read, speak English or use sign language, an interpreter is required.  If you need assistance arranging for an interpreter, please contact us as soon as possible so we may provide one for you.
